Purpose: Basis for control

Methodology: Trainer on his/her knees on the floor. The dog is at your left side.basic1

1. Right hand in collar, dog sitting. Pick up the left paw with your left hand and the right paw with your right hand. Say: “FIDO, DOWN.” Say it once and make the dog do it. Praise: “GOOD DOWN.” Repeat the words as often as you like.

2. Right hand in the collar behind the dog’s ears. Place your left hand at the base of the tail. Say: “FIDO, SIT.” Say it once and make the dog do it. Praise: “GOOD SIT.” Repeat the words as often as you like.

3. Right hand in the collar and pull forward (dog is standing). Remember to put (and KEEP) your left hand in front of the back legs. Praise: “GOOD STAND.” Repeat the words as often as you like.

Repeat the above sequence 5-8 times in each session. Remember that there is a sit between the stand and the down. Practice 1-3 times a day with at least two hours between each session. Avoid distractions at this point.

Sit/Stay: Right hand in front of the dog’s eyes. Say: “STAY.” Remember, do not say the dog’s name. Be able to hold a 2-minute sit/stay by the next class.

Eye Contact: Every once in awhile say the dog’s name in a soothing voice, and if the dog looks at you, say something such as: “WHAT A GOOD DOG.” Try to keep the dog’s attention on you for a few seconds.

Next week share something with us about your breed: what was it originally bred to do, or a unique characteristic. If you have a mixed breed dog, tell us something you like about your dog.
